Week 11 – Window Treatments
Window treatments can be one of the most challenging decorating decisions. With so many styles and options available, where do you begin?
The answer is to start with the function of the window covering.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Do you need to keep out sunlight?
- Do you want privacy from outside views?
- Do you prefer to leave the window completely uncovered?
Next, consider the mood you want to create in the room.
- Is the room meant for sleeping and relaxation?
- Will it be used for reading or watching television?
- Is it a space for games, entertaining, or family gatherings?
You should also consider how the window treatment will harmonize with the rest of the room. What decorating style are you using? How large are the windows? The answers to these questions will help narrow your choices.
Shades and Blinds
Shades and blinds can be used alone or paired with decorative top treatments. The top treatment may remain stationary while the shade or blind is adjusted as needed for privacy and light control.
Some shades pull down from the top, while others pull up from the bottom. Certain styles can be adjusted from both directions, allowing you to cover only the portion of the window you choose.
Roman shades and balloon shades offer a more elegant appearance. As they are raised, the fabric gathers into soft folds, creating a luxurious look. These styles are often coordinated with other window treatments in the room.
Venetian blinds are another popular option. They consist of multiple horizontal or vertical slats that can be adjusted to control light and privacy. Horizontal blinds are available in widths ranging from mini blinds to wide slats and come in a variety of colors and finishes. Vertical blinds generally have wider slats and are available in numerous colors, textures, and fabric designs.
Shutters
Shutters consist of panels with a solid frame that houses adjustable slats, solid panels, or fabric inserts. Depending on the size of the window, several panels may be hinged together.
When selecting shutters, it is important to plan how they will open and where the panels will stack when fully opened.
Curtains and Draperies
Curtains are fabric window coverings, while draperies are fabric window coverings that include a lining.
Sheer curtains are lightweight, translucent panels made from materials such as polyester, cotton, or linen. Their purpose is to soften and diffuse natural light while still allowing brightness into the room.
Curtains and draperies are often paired with decorative top treatments such as valances or cornices.
A valance is a short decorative treatment designed to cover the upper portion of a window. A cornice is a rigid, structured treatment that caps the top of the window frame.
Both valances and cornices can be used over sheer curtains, curtains, or draperies.
Depending on the style chosen, curtains or draperies may remain stationary or be installed on rods or rings that allow movement.
Cafe Curtains
Cafe curtains are short curtains that typically cover only the lower half of a window. They provide privacy while still allowing natural light to enter through the upper portion of the window.
Final Thoughts
The best window treatment is one that balances function, style, and the overall mood of the room. By first considering privacy, light control, and the room’s purpose, you can narrow your options and select a treatment that enhances both the beauty and practicality of your space. (6.18.2026)
